CYBERSECURITY JOB HUNTING GUIDE
Organize your job hunt
Author: Stefan Waldvogel
Use a structure for the application process
Job hunting takes time and you might send 100 applications. Do this with a structure and a table can help. You can find these tables online and all are similar.
You need fields like:
- Company -> you can add a link to the job description.
- Title -> If you have multiple skills, you might have multiple "basic" resumes.
- Benefits/Salary range/remote -> something unique to this job
- Application date -> important for the Follow up message.
- Follow up -> If you do not get anything back, write a follow-up email about one week after the initial application. If you really want the position you can write a very short follow-up again after a week. The reality is, most companies do not give a feedback and just ghost you. This is true for the US, in other countries you get nearly always a feedback.
- Contact information/Hiring Manager/Referral -> some details about how to contact a company. If you have a referral, this is important.
- Response -> Write down what you get back.
- Interview -> Sometimes you have 3 or more interviews.
- Thank you letter -> Important, even if you do not get the job, just do not burn bridges.

If you start sending applications, the chance to get to the next step is less than 10% and most companies ghost you (you do not hear anything). This is true for entry-level jobs, but not so much for more advanced jobs.
Do not be worried about that, it is just American style. If you get ghosted, you can write a negative review on Glassdoor and other websites. -> If you do this, please add a positive review for good companies, because the balance is important.
