CYBERSECURITY JOB HUNTING GUIDE
Do not hunt a random job
Author: Stefan Waldvogel
Particular vs. "any" job
You read all of this stuff, and you ask yourself: Do I really need to follow such a painful path to get a job in Cybersecurity?
The answer is: Probably not.
Why should you learn and read so much about job hunting? You want a job, and if you do more for a specific job, you get the job you want. I have many tech and soft skills, over 8,000 connections, and if I write right now a post on LinkedIn {I am looking for a job}, I work tomorrow (exaggeratedly said), but I do not get the job I want.
The point is:
We work 8 hours a day, and it is a time-consuming task. I want an enjoyable job with a family as co-workers; I want a friendly boss; I want to work for an excellent company; I want to help or teach people and more. This list is the "me, me, me" list, and most employers do not care about my me's at all because companies have their own "me, me, me" list. If I want to work for an outstanding and care-taking company, I have to bring a lot of value to "my" company. In exchange for this, the company might give me the things I want.
It is not hard to get any job but prepare for a particular position. To do this, you need to know what you want. Rank it in must-have, nice and optional.

Now, you know what you want, and you can tailor your networking in this direction. Add people in your target field and try to talk to them. If you send a connection request, add a question or a topic so you can speak. One piece of advice: Do not ask for a job right away because if you do not have a positive relationship with that person, your request goes to the trashcan. Build a meaningful relationship before you want something and try to help this person. This task takes time.
What is the catch?
Most people apply for hundreds of jobs, and it is a game with numbers. You do not get your wanted job if you apply for 400 positions because you do not have time to check each position.
I target one company and spend some weeks getting that single job. I include networking, building friendships, and much more.
