Author: Stefan Waldvogel
A free and very powerful hypervisor is Virtual Machine Manager.
If you use Linux, using QEMU/KVM/Virtual Machine Manager is a great option. This solution is one of the the most powerful of all hypervisors and it is free. If you use an Ubuntu or a different Linux, you have to install it first. For Debian based Linux versions (Kali/Ubuntu/etc.), the command is:
- sudo apt-get install virt-manager
Creating a new VM is simple
- Download an ISO cd image e.g. Kali or Ubuntu.
- Click on file and select "New Virtual Machine"
- This will start a wizard to guide you through the rest of your VM creation
- Enter your details
- Choose Local install media (ISO image or CDROM),
- Forward
- Locate your install media
- Use ISO image
- Browse to find the ISO you downloaded earlier
- Optional: Select the matching OS Type
- Optional: Select the matching Version
- Forward
- Choose Memory and CPU settings
- Memory (RAM): 1 GB (your choice)
- CPUs: 1 (your choice)
- Forward
- Select Enable storage for this virtual machine
- Select Create a disk image on the computer's hard drive
- 8 GB is the default
- Allocate entire disk now
- Forward
- Ready to begin installation
- Confirm the details
- Finish
- Sometimes you have to disconnect the installation media. If you click the light-bulb, you find all the details about the machine including the DC drive with the iso.
- Enter your details
You can take snapshots and clones:
Under "Edit" are the "Connection details". Here you can create and configure virtual networks.
This is a very stable server solution and free. Other hypervisors like VMWare Workstation Pro can do similar things but the price is about $200.
